Support Freeware Databases Standards
To support Freeware DBMS dsg provides following administrative services:
- Documentation for each Freeware DBMS
- Requirements and Recommendations
- Installation and Packaging Software for Freeware DBMS
- Installation a Freeware Product for single instance of Freeware Server
- Installation multiple instances Freeware Server on the same machine
- Information on Monitoring and Backups Freeware Databases
Documentation on Freeware DBMS
- This documentation is a part of the official
Mysql
and PostgreSql
Referencial Manual from web sites www.postgresql.com and www.mysql.com describing the main features of freeware DBMS.
Requirements and Recommendations
- MySQL is very popular freeware DBMS and now included in all major Linux distributions RedHat, MacOS X, Solaris & Sun's Linux
- PostgreSql offers more in referential integrity and fully ACID compliant
- Mysql and Postgres DBMS in comparison with Oracle ORDBMS
- Comparison Freeware DBMS
between each other
Installation and Packaging
- Mysql and PostgreSql source distributions are taken and compiled on Linux, SunOS and Irix plarforms using gcc3_0_1 compiler
- UPS/UPD will be used to support Freeware DBMS for all these platforms
Installing a single instance of freeware server
- UPS/UPD packages include functions to tailor freeware database datadir, port number, socket name and configuration file for each instance in freeawre datadir
- Also there are some functions for monitoring freeware server and start the client
- We provide UPD/UPS instructions how to install
Mysql and
PostgreSql
products from fnkits and configure a single instance of freeware server on the user's machine
Installing multiple instances
- To run multiple freeware servers means start freeware server instance with a different port and socket name
- UPD/UPS package is designed to configure additional
Mysql /
PostgreSql server instance on the same machine
- Another way to change the port and socket is specify them at runtime as the options for freeware server
Monitoring and Backups
- Currently dsg does not support monitoring and backups Freeware Databases
(unless there is a contract between dsg and the user) providing only information about
Mysql and
PostgreSql
monitoring tools and backup options
- Freeware server owner will shutdown and start the service in order to schedule
preventative maintenance.
Access Control
- The development environment will contain logons for any individuals to connect with freeware
database(s) issuied by freeware server or database owner. These logons will be used for
development and testing the user's applications. The new freeware database user will be added
by a database owner or superuser who has full sets of privileges
-
There can be several levels of privileges.
Mysql and
PostgreSql
have their own granularity of access.
- Application owners and individual users in the freeware databases will be given logons
by database owner. The password to the application owner's logon can be encrypted.
-
Optional a read only account can exist for the application. Any individual can use the read only logon.
MOUs with CSS-DSG
Users may negotiate an memorandum of understanding with css-dsg for dba
expertise for their freeware databases. There are standards to be met to qualify
for this service at a production level. See
runII standards.
