What Version of Symantec AntiVirus am I running?
It is easy to determine what version of Symantec Antivirus software you are running. In the tray area of your desktop (usually the lower right hand side) you should see a shield:

Simply use
your mouse and ‘double click’ on the icon. If you do not see this icon in the
tray, go to the ‘Start’ button, and look in the ‘Programs’ list for an entry
like, ‘Symantec Client Security’ and run that program.
You should
then see a window similar to the following:

On this
screen, you will see under ‘Program Versions’ the release level of the Symantec
Antivirus software you are running. If this version number is lower than the
recommended or current standard version as listed on our main page, please
contact your desktop support representative to have your system updated. Please
note: Symantec uses 4 separate numbers to represent the version number.
Additionally,
you can use this window to verify you are defined as a managed Symantec
antivirus client and that you have the latest anti-Virus Definition signature
files. If your system does not list, ‘CD-PRT-AV-A’ as your parent server,
please contact your desktop support representative for assistance.
For the,
‘Virus Definition File’ version, typically, Symantec releases a new update file
every day, so at most, you should only see a difference of one day on the
version date. Symantec maintains information regarding the current state of
signature files at this
web address. Our central managed server receives these updates shortly
after Symantec makes the updates available to the public. Once our central
server receives the updates, these new anti-virus signature files are sent out
to all centrally managed clients. If your computer is connected to our network
or you are connected via a VPN connection, your computer will automatically be
updated. If your computer is off-site, and you are connected to the network,
your computer is configured to check in with Symantec’s master site, and
retrieve the latest signature updates at least once a day. If necessary, you
can press the ‘Liveupdate’ button on the displayed window to fetch the latest
signature files from the Symantec site (Note, you will need local administrator
privileges to invoke this process.
